The Hitters

Willie Stargell and his big bat have the top seed in this season and find themselves facing formidable challengers including Matt Holliday, Hall-of-Famers Minnie Minoso, George Brett, and Luke Appling, plus Roy Sievers, Stan Hack, and Joe Kuhel. When the dust settles, only four are assured of moving on to Round 7.

The Results

As my old coach told me, “You can’t win games without hitters” and the big home run hitters proved the point this season. Willie Stargell continued his roll through the tournament, taking another first place, with the surprising Minnie Minoso finishing a respectable second. Sievers and Holliday will join them in Round 7. The others try again in Round 6.

Season Highlights

  • While the Holliday team led in batting average, Roy Sievers7 took the individual honors hitting at a .314 clip.
  • Willie Stargell led the league with 47 home runs.
  • Kuhel3 had two 5-hit games.
  • Stargell3, Stargell5, and Kuhel5 all had 3-HR games, Kuhel5 tacking 8 RBIs on to his total.
  • Walter Johnson2 pitched an 11-inning, 2-hit shutout vs Willie Stargell, striking out 16 and gaining a hard to come by victory for the Luke Appling team.
