Top performers for Round 6
Round 6 has come to a close, and before we set the seeding for Round 7, let take a look at the results of the 22 seasons that made up Round 6.
As you may recall, Round 6 was an “Elimination Round.” It was all or nothing for the batters as they were required to finish their season with a .500 record to move on to Round 7. The hitters faced these pitchers in Round 6. Here are some numbers:
- Round 6 saw 176 batters face each other in 154-game seasons
- 88 batters – exactly half of them – finished their seasons with a .500 or better record. 88 batters did not.
- There are 216 batters who qualified for Round 7 based on their Round 5 performances. 216 + 88 = 304, which is evenly divisible by 8, the number of batters in each season, (304 / 8 = 38), which means
- Round 7 will have 38 seasons, and no “Golden Tickets” will be issued
We are well on our way to number 1! We started with 600 batters and almost half have been eliminated. If the math holds up, we might have 6 or 7 more seasons to go as we determine, once and for all, who is the greatest offensive player in the history of baseball.*
*Up to 2015 because that’s the version of Strat-o-Matic computer baseball I am working with.
So far, I have played 270 seasons and 166,320 games, and I guess I must be around the halfway point, with plenty more games to go!
