With the close of Round Four, we say goodbye to some very good hitters.
But we are on our way to number 1! We started with 600 batters and are now down to 392 as we determine, once and for all, who is the greatest offensive player in the history of baseball.*
I know, I know—it’s probably Babe Ruth, but who is number two? Who is number three? Ted Williams? Ty Cobb? Barry Bonds? Willie Mays? I am also well aware that this will settle nothing, but I am having fun with this gigantic project!
Dale Mitchell and Buck Ewing get a reprieve: they did not qualify based on placing in the top 4 in their league or finishing above .500 but I need multiples of “8” to make the leagues for the next round, so they are in!
*Up to 2015 because that’s the version of Strat-o-Matic computer baseball I am working with.
The Order They Finished (393-600)
So far, I have played 199 seasons and 122,584 games and I guess I am approaching the halfway point; probably in the neighborhood of 200,000 more games to go!
In the next post, I will introduce the pitchers who will test the remaining hitters as we work our way toward the finals.
