The Hitters
Tris Speaker has been a consistent performer in the tournament thus far, winning over 110 games in each of his seasons; he appears to be a legitimate contender for the top 32. Standing in his way are a slate of Hall-of-Famers and standout stars, so this season might be more of a challenge.
We should see plenty of power from Earl Averill, Moises Alou, and Sammy Sosa, plenty of speed from Speaker, Otis Nixon, and Joe Kelley, and a balanced attack from Ginger Beaumont and Fred Lynn.
The top 4 finishers – ties included – and those who finish above .500 for the 154-game season, move on automatically to Round 9. The others will have a “last chance” in the Round 8 elimination round.

The Results
In second place after April, Tris Speaker then turned on the gas and led the rest of the way, crossing the 100-Win threshold for the fourth time in four tries. Earl Averill had a .500 or better record against everyone but Speaker, but Moises Alou snuck past for a second-place finish. After a disastrous 11-20 August, Sammy Sosa won his final four games to gain a .500 record and a tie with Joe Kelly for fourth place.
Fred Lynn, Ginger Beaumont, and Otis Nixon return to the elimination rounds to try to extend their stay in the tournament.
Season Highlights
- The Tris Speaker team not only topped the league in batting average, distancing second-place Ginger Beaumont by 37 points, but Speakers took the top seven individual slots, as well, with Speaker6 leading with a solid .348. He also had 17 triples to lead in that category, too.
- Averill8 led the league with 36 home runs.
- Otis Nixon led the league with 105 stolen bases. Otis Nixon3 had 7 stolen bases in a 19-inning game.
- Billy Wagner, pitching for the Earl Averill team, topped the league with 41 saves.
- In one game, Tris Speaker trounced Earl Averill, 19-2. But the headline should be: Speaker Pounds Out 30 Hits!
- There were nine 5-hit games.
