The Hitters
This should be an exciting matchup! Ted Williams and Stan Musial were often compared to each other during their playing careers, and they will go head-to-head this season; I do not envy the other hitters in this group, as Teddy Ballgame and Stan The Man will no doubt take up much of the oxygen in the room.
But they will not face a bunch of no-names: three additional Hall-of-Famers are in the mix. All-time triple leader, Sam Crawford, members of the 3000-hit club, Roberto Clemente and Cap Anson, will be joined by Giancarlo Stanton, Manny Ramirez, and Josh Hamilton. There should be plenty of offensive fireworks.
The top 4 finishers – ties included – and those who finish above .500 for the 154-game season, move on automatically to Round 9. The others will have a “last chance” in the Round 8 elimination round.

The Results
Playing against the rest of the league, Ted Williams and Stan Musial were even, with 96-39 records, but Ted dominated Stan in the head-to-head matchups, going 15-4. With 211 wins between them, there wasn’t much left for the other teams to pick up. Despite that, Manny Ramirez came back from the Elimination Round 6 to finish a strong third, with Giancarlo Stanton cruising into fourth place.
Well above .500 at home, Roberto Clemente’s dismal 28-49 record on the road doomed him to miss the cut for Round 9. He, Crawford, Hamilton, and Cap Anson will try again in Round 8.
Season Highlights
- Ted Williams combined the top average with the most home runs to prove to be more than could be handled, although Musial6 led the league with a lusty .356 average, closely followed by Clemente7 at .352. Musial4 led all hitters with 218 base hits.

- All nine Williams batters filled the top of the Base on Balls category, Williams3 drawing 113.
- Clemente7 had a 25-game hitting streak.

- In a 22-9 blowout of Manny Ramirez, Ted Williams6 had 9-RBIs, 6 of them in the ninth inning. Two days earlier, he had a 7-RBI game. I’m sure he was well atop of the league in RBIs at that point.
