Round 6 Season 6

George Brett-Featured-Card for Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

Hall of Famer George Brett leads the charge in the attempt to stay alive in the playoff and will have to contend with slugger (of the 1880s) John Reilly, Cubs HOFer Ryne Sandberg, the criminally under rated Vada Pinson, Kent Hrbek, “Chief” Owen Wilson, the Crime Dog, Fred McGriff, and Willie Davis. There’s little room for error here: only a .500 record guarantees a trip to Round 7.

The Results

Again, with the lack of production… despite this, George Brett played well all year and Vada Pinson won 50 games at home to take the top two spots. Kent Hrbek weakened down the stretch but still managed to stay above .500. Ryne Sandberg did not; he fell apart in the last month of the season, going 11-20 in August. The top three move on to Round 7 while Sandberg, Reilly, McGriff, Wilson, and Davis take the long way home.

Season Highlights

  • Pinson led the league with a .292 mark.
  • Sandberg6 and Pinson3 led individual batters with a meager 25 home runs.
  • Brett3 and Pinson had 18 triples. Willie Davis8 had 17.
  • Brett99 had a 21-game hit streak.
  • Christy Mathewson, pitching for Chief Wilson, had 32 complete games. Mathewson4 pitching for Kent Hrbek had 8 shutouts.
  • Brett6 had a 7-RBI game.
  • Sandberg9 had a 3-HR game.

No-Hitters

5/ 1 Freddie Fitzsimmons2 of the George Brett squad narrowly missed a perfect game against Chief Wilson. His only baserunner was a HBP to the third batter in the first inning. Fitzsimmons struck out 5 in the 8-0 victory.
5/21 Dazzy Vance of Chief Wilson no-hit Kent Hrbek, 3-0. Vance struck out 7 and walked 3.
