Round 6 Season 3

George Gore-Featured-Card for Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

George Gore is the top seed in this season but if I had to put money on it, Earle Combs or Roy Campanella are the ones I would peg as likely to move on based on the competition they faced in Round 5 (Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb respectively). Also vying for a chance to move on to Round 7 are Cupid Childs, Danny Murphy, Danny Tartabull, Bill Madlock, and Josh Donaldson. They will need a .500 record to move on.

The Results

Earl Combs performed as expected and Roy Campanella held on to a shaky finish to make up the quintet of qualifiers for Round 7. The old-timer committee of George Gore, Danny Murphy, and Cupid Childs will join them as they advance. We extend a fond farewell to Josh Donaldson, who was above .500 until the all-star break, Bill Madlock, who was above .500 after the all-star break, and Danny Tartabull, who just couldn’t get it together.

Season Highlights

  • In a relatively low-offense season, Earl Combs led teams in all the important categories, including batting average with .295. George Gore6 led individual batters with .327.
  • Roy Campanella5 led individual batters with 37 home runs.
  • Combs3 had a 23-game hitting streak.
  • Danny Tartabull had a 3-HR game vs the George Gore team and pitcher Jack Morris5.
  • Gore6 had a 7-RBI game.
  • Jack Morris6 struck out 17 Danny Tartabulls in 6 2/3 innings in a losing effort.

No-Hitters

8/14 Jack Morris1 no-hit Roy Campanella thanks to a fantastic play by Cupid Childs7, who robbed Roy Campanella4 of a base hit in the 8th inning to preserve the no-no and the 2-0 victory.
