“The Toy Cannon,” Jim Wynn has the top seed in this elimination season. Will his flashes of brilliance thus far in the tournament come to the fore? Five Hall-of-Famers stand in the way in person of George Kell, Lou Brock, Hughie Jennings, and Luke Appling. Power hitters Bob Watson, Luis Gonzalez, and Eddie Murray will also be obstacles. Only a .500 record will guarantee a slot in Round 7.

The Results

The power-hitting Jimmy Wynn showed up for this season, blasting 250 homers and taking 90 wins and first place as he edged out the speedy Lou Brock. Hughie Jennings also managed a .500 record, good for third and a trip to Round 7. Luke Appling lost his last two games and George Kell fell apart down the stretch to just miss the cutoff. We say goodbye to them, Bob Watson, Eddie Murray, and Luis Gonzalez.

Season Highlights

  • Brock’s .280 paced the teams with Watson9 leading the individuals with .329. The highest Brock hit .295.
  • Eddie Murray led individual batters with 37 home runs.
  • Brock3 had 18 triples.
  • The Brock team swiped a formidable 933 bases with Brock8 stealing 132 all by himself. Three other Brocks also topped 100 steals.

  • Eddie Murray3 and Jim Wynn4 had 3-HR games.

No-Hitters


6/13 Rube Marquard1 tossed a Perfect Game against Luis Gonzalez as the Eddie Murray team won 2-0. Marquard struck out 8.
7/14 Dazzy Vance6, pitching for Luis Gonzalez no-hit Jimmy Wynn, 3-0, walking 5 and striking out 11.
8/18 Freddie Fitzsimmons2 of George Kell threw nothing but goose eggs vs. Luis Gonzalez, holding them to a mere 3 walks.
