Round 6 Season 17

Harmon Killebrew-Featured-Card for Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

This might be an interesting season! Between the raw power of Hall-of-Famer Harmon Killebrew to the high averages of the baseball pioneers Hardy Richardson, Ross Barnes, and Jack Doyle, to the modern attack of Reggie Sanders, Gene Tenace, and Davey Lopes, I don’t even know where to put Indians’ star Joe Vosmik. 154 games should do the job of shaking out who’s going on in the tournament.

The Results

Harmon Killebrew won on the season’s final day and coupled with a Gene Tenace loss, it allowed them to tie for the pennant with identical 89-65 records, three games ahead of the only other qualifier for Round 7, Hardy Richardson. Despite leading in team batting average and flirting with .500 for most of the season, Ross Barnes was unable to seal the deal. Both Lopes and Sanders had a shot, but faded down the stretch. They, along with Vosmik and Jack Doyle have been eliminated.

Season Highlights

  • Jack Doyle at .303 and Ross Barnes4 at .301 were the only batters to top .300.
  • Killebrew7 blasted 43 home runs as the Killebrew team hit an impressive 328.
  • Christy Mathewson2 of the Hardy Richardson squad had an impressive year, going 25-10 with 9 shutouts.
  • Gene Tenace2 struck out SIX times in a 13-inning game.
  • Two Killebrews and two Sanders each had 3-HR games. Killebrew had 8 RBIs in his effort.
  • Richardson3 had a 7-RBI game.

Tim has been a baseball fan for most of his life and has played a great deal of baseball and softball over the years. Although his playing days are long behind him, he remembers back when he was an extremely fast catcher with an extremely bad arm. He has been playing Strat-o-Matic baseball since he was 14. Tim is currently living in southwest France and writes A LOT about coffee at Procaffeination.com. He has also written Procaffeination: A Coffee Lover's Dictionary, which will be available soon.
