Round 6 Season 13

Pie Traynor-Featured-Card for Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

Cooperstown is represented by HOFer Pie Traynor in this season that spans the history of baseball. He and Curt Walker cover the 1920s, Mike Smith and George Wood the nineteenth century, Gary Matthews and Mickey Tettleton the 1970s-90s, and Todd Helton and Carl Crawford the twenty-first century. The challenge is clear: a .500 record or better to move on to Round 7 and it will only increase in difficulty from here.

The Results

Todd Helton finished the season strong but George Wood won on the season’s final day to hold on to a tie for first place. Pie Traynor had a great August to secure third place and a sufficient winning percentage to ensure we will see him in Round 7. Mike Smith (or is it Elmer? They keep changing it! For what it’s worth, his birth name is Elmer Ellsworth Smith, and he played as Mike), Gary Matthews, and Carl Crawford were all in it but didn’t have the juice to close the deal. They, along with Curt Walker and Mickey Tettleton are back on the bus.

Season Highlights

  • Todd Helton3 led individual batters with a .311 average.
  • Mickey Tettleton9 led the league with 31 home runs.
  • Crawford3 slashed 22 triples.
  • Todd Helton closed out the month of July with a 16-0 shellacking of Mickey Tettleton. Jack Morris wend the distance, scattering 4 hits to gain the win.
  • Smith2 hammered 3 home runs in an 11-inning loss to Pie Traynor.
  • Dazzy Vance4 struck out 18 Mickey Tettletons in 10 2/3 innings. Vance6 struck out 17 Tettletons in 10 innings and another Vance struck out 16 in 9.
