Round 6 Season 10

Joe Mauer-Featured-Card for Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

Top seed Joe Mauer had his first losing season in Round 5. Can he overcome the top-notch pitching that has dominated the hitters in Round 6? He is joined in this elimination season by Dixie Walker, Riggs Stephenson, Freddie Freeman, all-hit-no-field Bob Dillinger, couldn’t-strike-him-out-if-you-had-to Joe Sewell, free-agent Curt Flood, and the-human-rain-delay Mike Hargrove. 154 games will tell the tale – only a .500 record guarantees a slot in Round 7.

The Results

Riggs Stephenson held off a surging Dixie Walker to claim the first place flag, whil Joe Mauer and Bob Dillinger started off strong and held on to their winning records. Freddie Freeman was not so lucky, fading at the end of the season and losing his last two games to come up shy of the required .500 winning percentage. Curt Flood fell apart after the all-star break, Mike Hargrove had a chance but couldn’t seal the deal, and Joe Sewell never recovered from an abysmal 4-21 April.

Season Highlights

  • As a rule, batting averages were higher this season, with Riggs Stephenson managing a .315 mark.
  • Very little power was evident as Freddie Freeman led in home runs with a meager 19.
  • Walker3 had a 27-game hitting streak. Walker8 had 26 and Stephenson9 had 23.
  • Christy Mathewson for the Bob Dillinger squad had 8 shutouts.

No-Hitters

4/12 Christy Mathewson7 of Riggs Stephenson shut down Bob Dillinger, allowing a only a third innning walk and only 5 balls to be hit to the outfield—quite the performance.
