The Hitters

As we kick off the Round 6 elimination round, it’s do or die. Kenny Lofton and fellow Cleveland Indian teammate Jim Thome have the top two seeds in this season. They will face off with Bob Meusel, Deacon White, Vic Wertz, and Johnny Pesky, as well as
Scott Rolen and Carl Reynolds. A .500 record is necessary to guarantee a slot in Round 7.

The Results

Bob Meusel started off hot and never looked back, garnering 100 wins and topping the league by 17 games over second place Jim Thome. Vic Wertz took third and Johnny Pesky won his last three games to bring his record over the required .500 mark. We say goodbye to Deacon White, Carl Reynolds, Scott Rolen, and fan-favorite Kenny Lofton.

Season Highlights

  • Pesky led the teams with an even .300 average with Johnny Pesky leading the individuals with a .322 average. Pesky3 was close behind at .321.
  • Jim Thome and Thome3 led individual batters with 37 home runs.
  • Lofton3 had a 21-game hitting streak.
  • Vic Wertz, Scott Rolen99, and Thome4 had 3-HR games.
  • Davis99 had a 7-RBI game.
  • Dazzy Vance6 (Scott Rolen) struck out 17 Jim Thomes in 8 1/3 innings. Two days later, Dazzy Vance4 (Johnny Pesky) struck out 17 Jim Thomes in 7 1/3!

No-Hitters

4/12 Christy Mathewson of the Bob Meusel squad no-hit Vic Wertz, 12-0. Matty struck out 7, walking only 3.
5/17 Christy Mathewson6, pitching for Scott Rolen, tossed a perfect game against Carl Reynolds. The only run was on a solo home run in the third.

Tim Bruno
