The Results

Joe DiMaggio continued his winning ways, again topping 100 victories and taking the pennant by 23 games over second place Rod Carew. Harlond Clift and Arky Vaughan will also advance to Round 7. Edgar Martinez finished strong, going 24-13 down the stretch, but it wasn’t enough to crack the .500 mark. He and Matthews, Torgeson, and Miller head to Round 6.

To a large degree, the top seeds are still significantly ahead of the rest of the field in these rounds. It will be interesting to see how that changes as the lesser lights are eliminated from the tournament.

Season Highlights

  • While the Rod Carew team led in average with .299, DiMaggio5 led all individual hitters with .338, narrowly missing the Triple Crown, coming up short in home runs with 37.
  • DiMaggio8 led with 42 homers. I’m not sure what the computer manager was thinking but DiMaggios finished 1-10 (!) on the season HR list.
