Round 5 Season 48

Jackie-Robinson-Featured-Card Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson had a stellar Round 1 and followed it up with a solid Round 3. Can he keep up the pace? Fellow HOFers Ernie Banks, Fred McGriff, and Johnny Evers stand in the way, as do Ryan Braun, Bobby Murcer, Larry Doyle, and slugging first baseman, Ryan Howard. I’m hoping for some fireworks in this penultimate season in Round 5. Let’s see who makes the cut for Round 7.

The Results

Not a big offensive showing, but Jackie Robinson continued his winning ways, starting strong and cruising to the pennant despite a late challenge from Larry Doyle. A final-day Bobby Murcer victory, coupled with a Ryan Braun loss gave us a tie for fourth place as Ryan Howard hung on for third. Banks, Evers, and McGriff head to Round 6 for a last chance to move on.

Season Highlights

  • Larry Doyle led the teams in both batting average and ERA (Robinson was second in both), so his second-place showing comes down to his lack of power. Doyle led individual hitters with a .306.
  • Ryan Howard out-slugged the HOFers, leading with a respectable 267 team home runs. Howard3 had 36.
  • Robinson3 had a 23-game hitting streak.
  • Ryan Howard had two 5-hit games in the space of 3 games. In the second, three of those hits were home runs.
  • Banks3 and Braun6 also had 3-HR games.
  • Jackie Robinson had a 7-RBI game.

No-Hitters

7/15 Red Faber blanked Ryan Braun as Bobby Murcer won, 5-0. Faber walked 3 and struck out 5.

Tim Bruno

Tim has been a baseball fan for most of his life and has played a great deal of baseball and softball over the years. Although his playing days are long behind him, he remembers back when he was an extremely fast catcher with an extremely bad arm. He has been playing Strat-o-Matic baseball since he was 14. Tim is currently living in southwest France and writes A LOT about coffee at Procaffeination.com. He has also written Procaffeination: A Coffee Lover's Dictionary, which will be available soon.
