Dick Allen featured card for Baseball's Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

This season is basically made up of four modern Hall-of-Famers: Dick Allen, Larry Walker, Lou Brock, and everyone’s favorite leadoff hitter, Rickey Henderson, one WWII-era star, Taffy Wright, and three hitters from the 1800s: Tip O’Neill, Fred Dunlap, and Jack Doyle. Let’s see what happens when players from different eras truly collide. Top four move on.

The Results

Dick Allen cranked 338 home runs to power his way to first place. He led pole-to-pole and never had any serious competition. Larry Walker got off to a so-so start but really locked it in as the weather got warmer. Rickey Henderson turned it on down the stretch to steal his way into a third-place tie with Tip O’Neil. Despite leading all teams in average, Taffy Wright was never able to put it all together, just as Lou Brock and his 838 team steals found himself on the short end of the stick. Dunlap and Doyle were just unable to find their groove. We’ll see the top finishers in Round 7 and the others in Round 6.

Season Highlights

  • The batting average leader board was almost entirely Taffy Wright and Tip O’Neill. Wright6 edged out O’Neil6 .332 to .330. Dick Allen4 snuck into tenth place with a .304 average.
  • Allen3 led all hitters with 41 homers, with two other Allens with 40.
  • There were more than a few stolen bases this season:

  • Tip O’Neill5 had a 21-game hitting streak.
  • Walter Johnson, pitching for the Dick Allen team, had 8 shutouts on the year.
  • Allen6, 7, and 8 all had 3-HR games, as did Larry Walker9.
  • Walker6, Allen8, and Allen2 each had a 7-RBI game.
  • Rickey Henderson8 stole 6 bases in a game against Lou Brock.
