Round 5 Season 37

Johnny Mize featured card for Baseball's Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

I expect a reasonable amount of offense this season, with Hall of Famer Johnny Mize leading the way. Also in the mix is HOFer Al Kaline and should be HOFer Kenny Lofton (seriously, without the strike in 1994, he makes 2500 career hits and a .300 career batting average and he’s easily on his way to Cooperstown). But we should also see fireworks from the oft-injured Pete Reiser, Oriole great Boog Powell, Davey Lopes, Irish Meusel, and Graig Nettles. Four slots for Round 7 are the prize.

The Results

Johnny Mize lived up to the hype, leading in most of the offensive categories, including batting average and home runs. He is clearly staking a claim to being included in the top 32 hitters for the tournament. Pete Reiser also did well, chalking up 90 victories of his own. Al Kaline hung in, grabbing third place, and Irish Meusel climbed up from the number seven seed to claim fourth. Powell, Lofton, Nettles, and Lopes try again in Round 6.
