Round 5 Season 36

Hank Greenberg-Featured-Card Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

Hank Greenberg is the clear favorite this season and has an excellent shot at finishing in the top 25 overall. But his path may not be easy: Lefty O’Doul wasn’t much defensively, but boy, could he hit! He had a .349 lifetime average, and if he had just quit pitching when he was 20, he’d be in the Hall-of-Fame like Greenberg, Joe Gordon, Monte Irvin, and Deacon White. If Rafael Palmeiro had stayed away from the juice, he’d be a HOFer, too. We’ll also see what two-sport star Bo Jackson knows and if Ruben Sierra can stay alive in the tournament. The top 4 get a free ride to Round 7.

The Results

Despite the lofty .312 team batting average of Lefty O’Doul, Hank Greenberg used his prodigious power to pull ahead and take the pennant. Joe Gordon also pounded out the round-trippers to take third, and Bo Jackson finished strong to tie Monte Irvin for fourth place. These five will make the trip to Round 7 while Palmeiro, who had a slow start and couldn’t catch up, White, and Sierra head to Round 6 for a last gasp.
