Round 5 Season 31

Joey Votto Featured-Card Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

Joey Votto has benefitted from two things in this tournament: a relatively easy slate of opponents and the fact that he is using the results of the first 10 years of his career. He may do well again as his season mates are not of particularly high rank. Chick Hafey and Bid McPhee are the two Hall-of-Famers represented here and Jim Gentile and Bob Meusel had good, if brief, careers. Rounding out the roster is Dodger great Steve Garvey, Vic Wertz, and Jose Cardenal. The top 4 finishers move on to Round 7.

The Results

Chick Hafey looked to quiet those who question his election to the Hall-of-Fame by winning the pennant by a comfortable 11 games. His surprising power (306 home runs) and solid base hitting (.278 average) helped keep him ahead of Joey Votto and Jim Gentile. Steve Garvey played strong to the finish to qualify for Round 7, while Bob Meusel faded from contention. Bid McPhee might have been the best fielding second baseman of the nineteenth century but he was clearly overmatched here. He and Wertz, and Cardenal head to Round 6.
