Round 5 Season 3

Babe-Ruth-Featured-Card for Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

These first three seasons of Round 5 have had some made for Hollywood match ups: Babe Ruth vs Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds against his godfather, Willie Mays, and now at the bottom of the seeds, Pete Rose vs Ichiro Suzuki. Lots of fun; I wonder what the next few seasons will bring us?

The class of the league is clearly Tris Speaker; he has handled himself well in his previous appearances, winning well over 100 games each time. Stars of the 1880s and 90s – and teammates – Mike Tiernan and George Gore, wade in against the more modern Bob Watson, Chase Utley, and Rico Carty. Top 4 advance!

The Results

Tris Speaker won his first five ballgames and never looked back, sweeping to a convincing victory, 30 games ahead of second-place Chase Utley. My personal favorite, Rico Carty, and Mike Tiernan both advance to Round 7 with the others heading to Round 6 for a last-ditch effort to remain in the tournament.

Season Highlights

  • On top of the Tris Speaker team leading in batting average, Speaker8 led all hitters with a .3398 average, his 2 hits in the season’s final game allowing him to edge out Speaker9 with .3397.
  • Speaker8 also smacked 17 triples and 52 doubles, but that wasn’t enough to catch Speaker99 with 55.
  • Bob Watson7 led all hitters with 29 home runs.
  • In one game, Speaker slapped George Gore around 21-2.
  • Watson99 had a 3HR game, including a walk-off solo shot in the 10th vs Rico Carty.
  • No-Hitters
