Round 5 Season 27

Mike Piazza Featured-Card Baseballs Greatest Player Playoff

The Hitters

We should see some moderate power this season as top seed Mike Piazza leads the field. He’ll see significant challenges from Hall-of-Famers Dan Brouthers, Heinie Manush, and Eddie Murray. Additionally, Prince Fielder, Oscar Gamble, Darryl Strawberry, and Fielder Jones have proven to be no slouches in the tournament. There’s only a guarantee of moving forward to Round 7 with a top 4 finish or .500 record. 154 games will tell the tale.

The Results

In a surprise performance, Dan Brouthers showed that those “pioneer” stars had game, running away with the flag and finishing 22 games ahead of second place Darryl Strawberry – another surprising finish, coming up from the number seven seed. Equally surprising, we had six qualifiers for Round 7 with Manush and Piazza taking third and fourth, and Gamble and Fielder finishing above .500. Murray and Jones head to Round 6 for a last chance to move on.

Season Highlights

  • Dan Brouthers led all teams in hitting with a .304 average and Brouthers4 led individual hitters with .325.
  • Piazza9 led in home runs with 38. He also grounded into 30 double plays.

    No-Hitters

7/24 Walter Johnson3, pitching for Fielder Jones, notched a real beauty against Darryl Strawberry, striking out 8 and the only baserunner being courtesy of a hit batter in the fourth inning. Jones won 2-0.
8/19 Walter Johnson2 also no-hit Darryl Strawberry, 5-0, allowing only 1 walk and striking out 9.
