The Results

What a battle! In a tight race, Ed Delahanty finished strong to pull away from the field while Bottomley, Jackson, and Gwynn ended in a three-way tie for second. Mike Trout also managed to finish above .500 and Adrian Gonzalez won on the final day of the season to secure his own .500 record. All 6 qualified to move directly to Round 7. Thome had a disastrous August and missed his chance. He and Perez will see action in Round 6.

Season Highlights

  • Maybe not surprisingly, Tony Gwynn led in team hitting, finishing more than 30 points ahead of second place Delahanty.
  • There was plenty of good hitting, thanks to Gwynn and Delahanty with firepower courtesy of everyone else
  • Trout5 had 18 triples on the year.
  • Gwynn had a 23-game hitting streak and Gwynn6 had an active 21-game streak as the season ended.
  • Four different Walter Johnsons topped 300 Ks
  • In the second game of the season, Tony Gwynn banged out 26 hits in an 18-2 drubbing of Jim Bottomley.
  • Reggie Jackson4 and Reggie Jackson7 clouted 3 home runs on consecutive days vs. Jim Thome. The next night, Walter Johnson struck out 18 Reggies in 11 innings.
